VENUE

SAP2019 will be held at the Skukuza Conference Centre in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. The Kruger National Park, located 400 km north east of Johannesburg, is one of the world’s largest game reserves covering almost 20,000 square kilometres, with all of the Big Five found here in abundance. It has many rest camps with accommodation. The conference will be held at the main rest camp, Skukuza, which is located on the Sabie River and has world-class conference facilities and accommodation. Note that all camps in the Kruger National Park are enclosed with an electrified fence.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is available in Skukuza Rest Camp in the form of bungalows and safari tents at around R 1600 per night for two people. Even though it is possible to stay outside of the Kruger National Park and drive in every day for the conference, it is not advisable. Bookings should be made directly from the South African National Parks website. Instructions are given below. Note the whole of the Skukuza has an electric fence, so no dangerous animals can enter the camp. It is STRONGLY advised that accommodation is booked in advance to prevent disappointment. If you plan to arrive early at the Kruger National Park or stay after the conference, it is also advisable to book that accommodation early.

Do not hesitate to contact the conference organisers at sap2019@sun.ac.za if you are uncertain or need advice. However, we cannot book any accommodation on your behalf.

To book accommodation though SANParks website is as follow:

  • “Register for Online Bookings”
  • Login and go to “Book Accommodations”

ACTIVITIES

Activities in the Kruger National Park include game drives (day or night), guided bush walks and even mountain biking. The roads within the park are in excellent condition and, whilst guided game drives are available, renting a car and driving around the park yourself is a highlight not to be missed. It is recommended that delegates spend additional time in the Kruger National Park before or after the conference and reserve accommodations at other rest camps as well.

CLIMATE

The conference will be held during the rainy season, so expect thunderstorms. The average minimum and maximum temperatures should be around 20°C and 32°C respectively.

MALARIA

The Kruger National Park is a malaria area. Please consult your local travel clinic or doctor for recommendations on malaria prophylaxis and mosquito deterrent products.
